Common Cleaning Mistakes we make while cleaning

Cleaning a home requires thoroughness, but there are many mistakes that all of us make, wasting our hard work. We will discuss some of the most common cleaning mistakes we make and how to solve them.

Mistakes and their Solutions

To ensure all your hard work pays off, and your home stays spick and span, here are some mistakes and how to avoid them.

Wrong Type of Cloth

Most commonly, when dusting we use the same piece of cloth to clean all kinds of surfaces, tables shelves or any marble slabs. This is not the right practice, cleaning all the surfaces with the same cloth. Not only does this damage the surfaces, it also spreads germs throughout the house. It damages the surface, as a piece of cloth usually damages the glass.

Solution

One should use separate cloth for different surfaces. If you clean your decoration pieces with one cloth, you should clean the kitchen counters with a separate cloth.  Do not use your kitchen sponge! They are known to be the dirtiest object in your home.  So keep a separate cloth for places where your food is kept.

For cleaning hard surfaces, you should use heavy-duty microfiber dusters. The dust particles cling to the fibers, thus making it the most suitable to clean. The fiber can also be cleaned, just give it a whirl in the washing machine.

You can use a softer material to clean the glass surfaces, to avoid getting scratches.

Bottom to Top

It’s a common practice to sweep and mop the floor first and then dust the couch or tables. What this does is it makes the dust particles fall to the floor and then sweep the floor again.

Solution

Make it a habit to dust your furniture first, so that when the dust falls on to the floor you no longer have to repeat the process of sweeping and mopping the floor.

You should clean your ceiling, racks, cupboards and drawers, after you are dusting these objects, then sweep.

Cleaning Carpet

It doesn’t matter if you are an adult living alone or have kids, someone is bound to spill something and your beautiful carpet or rug is bound to be ruined.

The first thing someone does after a spill is to scrub the rug or carpets. This might not be the best practice. What it does is that it makes the carpet expand and stretch, it doesn’t even make the stain go away, it goes further deep.

Solution

Hiring professional carpet cleaners might be the best option, however, you can do something about it as well. But if you do plan to do it yourself, speed is the key. If you wait for some time, the stain is going to go deeper and make it permanent.

Don’t scrub, rather put a dry towel or cloth, the cloth will absorb the liquid. Make sure, you use a white cloth, so that the cloth doesn’t lose its color, and further damage your beautiful carpet or rug. Once the intensity of the stain has gone down, use a stain remover to completely remove the stain.

Clean your tools

The most common mistake is that we don’t clean the tools; we use them to clean everything else. While cleaning the tool collects dust particles, which set in them.  The tools collect dust and bacteria, if not cleaned regularly.

The better your tools are maintained, the longer and efficiently they will work.

Solution

For reasons mentioned above, cleaning your cleaning tools is a must.

The clothes used to wipe shelves or slabs, need to be washed and cleaned thoroughly after every cleaning session.  It lowers the probability of your kitchen getting infected.

Sponges, although seem like they can be used forever, they really can’t. They work for a certain period of time. After a while, the damp sponge serves as a petri dish for the bacteria to multiply in.  Wash the sponges properly and make sure they dry. After a while replace the sponge.

Vacuums are surely a life saver; it sucks debris from the deeper end of a carpet and corners we can’t reach. But what if the vacuum is clogged from all the previous cleaning sessions and it’s not working now. Not just this, but also creates respiratory issues, as it leaves tiny dust particles in the air. To avoid these problems, clean your vacuum every once in a while, and empty its bin after every use.
